Our team of dentists include Dr. Joseph Shohmelian, Dr. Wendy Lou, Dr. Nicholas Wilding, Dr. Janie Kim, Dr. Josephine Ha, Dr. Susan Kok and Dr. Jae-man Hong.

Dr. Joseph Shohmelian

A 1978 graduate of Sydney University, Dr. Shohmelian founded Chatswood Dental in 1996, having practised in the Chatswood-Willoughby area since graduating. Having established himself as an expert in general and reconstructive dentistry for more than 30 years, he now takes great pride in sharing his wealth of knowlelge with colleagues both at Chatswood Dental and SmileCare, an associate practice in Chatswood while still maintaining personal contact with his patients in a full-time capacity.

With emphasis on quality personal service, the goal for all patients is the improvement of self-esteem by creating a natural beautiful smile, artistically matched to each patient with consideration to their age, facial features and general dental health. The creation of beautiful smiles using the latest technologies of laser teeth whitening, porcelain veneers and implants have been his field of expertise for more than two decades.

As a well-known practitioner in the field of Dental Implants, and with a Fellowship from the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (1988) and a Fellowship from the World Congress of MicroDentistry, Dr. Shohmelian has improved the quality of life for thousands of patients by helping them get rid of removable false teeth, using implants and crowns or bridges to create strong, secure and natural replacements for their missing natural teeth. As one of the first practitioners to perform porcelain veneers in Sydney in the early 1980’s, he has had extensive experience in the beautification of countless smiles.

In addition with over 20 years of experience in treating orthodontic problems, Dr. Shohmelian's training and expertise provides younger patients with the added benefit of early intervention to prevent major orthodontic problems, and in combination with a variety of techniques for adults, provides cosmetic dentistry solutions for even the most difficult problems, usually in a team effort with selected orthodontists.

Dr. Wendy Lou

Dr. Wendy Lou grew up in Canberra, and graduated from Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from University of Sydney in 1988. She also has a post-graduate degree (MScDent) in molecular genetics, researching the genes responsible for congenital missing teeth. As a new graduate she gained extensive experience at Westmead Hospital and later, in privates practices in both ACT and NSW including her own dental surgery prior to taking on the role of a mother. She has two teenage sons and works part-time both at Chatswood Dental and as a member of the academic staff at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sydney where she teaches final year dental students.

She enjoys and practices most aspects of Dentistry, including restorative, cosmetics, prosthodontics, endodontics and orthodontics. Throughout her career, she has maintained her gentle and caring attitude towards her patients and an unwavering perfectionism toward her work.

Other interests, if time allows, include tennis, skiing, snorkelling, photography, art and design, and as well as painting and drawing.

Dr. Nicholas (Nick) Wilding

Dr. Nick Wilding was born in Sydney and grew up on the Central Coast where he attended Central Coast Grammar School. He moved to the North Shore following the completion of his high school education and attended the University of Sydney where he completed a Bachelor of Medical Science. Following this successful course of study, Dr. Wilding enrolled in the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Sydney and graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery.

Dr. Wilding has a genuine empathy and caring nature, which, along with his soft touch and gentle manner make the dental experience much more pleasant than expected by most patients. Your appointments with Dr. Wilding are carried out in a calm and relaxed environment and the treatments are always discussed with you in great depth. His eye for detail and desire for providing everyone with a great smile coupled with his knowledge on the latest dentistry has to offer, ensures that you receive the best possible treatment.

Dr. Wilding likes to spend his time-off outdoors in the sun and enjoys a wide variety of sports and hobbies including golf, skiing, surfing, rugby and cricket, just to name a few.

Dr. Janie Kim

Dr Janie Kim spent her earlier years in New Zealand, where she attended University of Otago, graduating with Bachelor of Dental Surgery with Credit.
Her main goal in private practice is to improve patients’ oral hygiene and appearance through communication and motivation, which has been demonstrated by high patient satisfaction. She frequently attends continuing education programmes in various fields and has a particular interest in conservative and cosmetic dentistry. Utilising the latest techniques and with the best materials available, Dr. Kim continues to provide the highest standards of dental care for all patients.

In addition to providing excellence in these fields she has also had previous experience as a dental and maxillofacial house surgeon in Christchurch Hospital, giving her the ability to carry out pain-free extractions where the need arises. She is certified to perform Peripheral Intravenous Cannulation, Venepuncture and Resuscitation in the unlikely event of a medical emergency situation.

She has excellent communication skills and this has been proven by being awarded the LP Davies Prize in Community Dental Health 2008 in New Zealand. In addition, she speaks fluent English, Korean and Japanese. Like so many existing patients, we are certain that you will find comfort in her care and will enjoy your visits.

Dr. Josephine Ha

Having graduated from University of Otago in New Zealand, Josephine brings a wealth of experience from her previous roles working in hospitals and private practice in Auckland. She has special interests in conscious sedation and pain management in dentistry, always striving to make each visit as comfortable as possible. Josephine is passionate about great dentistry and takes pride in her work on all her patients. She is fully dedicated to continuing education and keeping abreast of the constantly evolving dental field. A gentle and caring clinician, her goal is to exceed expectations and provide care and education with genuine empathy for her patients. She designs treatment plans to suit each patient with consideration to their total needs.

Dentistry aside, Josephine loves baking and cooking, and venturing to new places to eat! She always welcomes recommendations and sharing recipes (in exchange for dental education!). She looks forward to meeting you and helping you achieve and maintain a healthy smile.

Dr. Jae-man Hong

Dr. Jae-man Hong has been working on a part-time basis at Chatswood Dental since his graduation from the University of Adelaide in 2009. Dr. Hong frequently attends continuing education courses, having most recently commenced an Honours year of study at Adelaide University, a very prestigious opportunity that he could not refuse. Utilising the latest conservative techniques and with the best materials available, Dr. Hong continues to provide the highest standards of dental care for all patients. Through his genuine caring nature, you will find he is one of the gentlest dental surgeons in Sydney, always putting his patient’s comfort above all else. Your appointments with Dr. Hong are carried out in an unhurried manner and the treatments are always discussed with you in great depth. With his goal of providing everyone with a great smile, Dr. Hong has a particular interest in cosmetic dentistry and is able to rejuvenate your smile to how you have always wanted them to be.

He is extremely competent at general dentistry and the restoration of teeth that have been extensively damaged by decay or have fractured and can provide beautiful natural-looking restorations to replace old unsightly amalgam fillings. Dr. Hong has knowledge and ability far beyond his level of experience and constantly impresses both patients and colleagues with his high level of skill and professionalism.

Dr. Susan Kok

Dr Susan Kok was born in Sydney, and grew up on the North Shore. Following completion of secondary school at, she went to New Zealand to attend the University of Otago, and upon graduation, moved back home to Sydney. She has since been working in private practice, and has a particular interest in cosmetic dentistry and oral surgery. She thoroughly enjoys working with all patients, and caring for them and their oral health is her topmost priority.

Dr Kok is also in her final year of Medicine at the University of Sydney, and is expected to be awarded her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery with Honours at the end of 2010.

At Chatswood Dental, our patients enjoy the benefits of having a visiting medical colleague who administers Intravenous or Twilight Sedation whenever undergoing lengthy or complex procedures such as the surgical placement of implants for the replacement of missing teeth. Dr. Bree Belford has had extensive experience in the complex and difficult fields of Emergency Medicine both in the USA and in Australia and has been head of the Casualty and Accident Departments of major hospitals over recent years. His expertise and wonderful techniques of sedation (accompanied by complete amnesia of the treatments we have performed) provides our patients (especially the very anxious ones) with the best facility for treatments available anywhere in Sydney.

Our staff, headed by Shannon Martin, who is highly experienced in helping patients with all enquiries, continuously provide the service, the safe environment and personal attention that every patient deserves.
